Japan is a so-called “major fishing power”, surrounded by the 6th largest EEZ (Exclusive Economic Zone) in the world, and blessed with abundant coastal fishing ground. On the other hand, our fishing industry faces various challenges, both domestic and international, such as the issues pertaining to business improvement, fishery resources, trade, food standards and environment. In order to solve those issues, the JFA strives to coordinate views in the industry and reflect it in the Diet, the government and other offices concerned. On an international front, the JFA is making efforts to promote healthy development of fisheries in the international domain in close collaboration with international organizations (e.g. FAO) as well as private-level international fishery organizations and national fisheries organizations in each country.
The JFA is also engaged in promotion of seafood by hosting a seafood show, introducing HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point) system to meat higher level of quality and hygienic control requirements for fishery products, and hosting training sessions and seminars.
And furthermore, Programs for promoting export of Japanese seafoods are underway.
The JFA is also engaging in various publicity activities through publication of periodicals and website, in order to obtain correct understanding and support of the Japanese people to the fisheries industry.
